
Dr. Dimosthenis Karatzas is a professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and Associate Director of the Computer Vision Centre (CVC) in Spain. He leads the Vision and Language research group at CVC. Dr. Karatzas earned his PhD from the University of Liverpool, UK, in 2003. His main research interests include computer vision, machine learning, robust reading systems, document image analysis, human-document interaction, and human perception modeling. As an innovator, he co-founded two start-ups: TruColour (UK, 2007) and AllRead (Spain, 2019). Dr. Karatzas has also been the principal investigator of numerous research projects and technology transfer contracts with companies. Notably, he initiated the Library Living Lab (L3), converting a public library into an open, participatory innovation space. He is known for launching the Robust Reading Competition (RRC) series, which has become a leading international benchmark in his field, engaging over 12,000 researchers from 120+ countries. Dr. Karatzas is a recipient of the 2013 IAPR - ICDAR Young Investigator Award and a 2016 Google Research Faculty Award. He serves as chair of the IAPR TC-11 (Reading Systems), is a member of the IAPR Education Committee, and is affiliated with IEEE, SPIE, and IAPR.
